About Chesterfield Sofas
What is a Chesterfield Sofa?
A chesterfield is a style of lounge. They are identifiable by a few key features. The most easily recognizable is the rolled arms. The arms are usually the same height as the back. Featuring a circular roll that will often extend from the arm all the way around to the back of the sofa. The second key feature is the tufts. These are basically buttons that have been pulled deeply into the cushioning. The tufts will usually form a diamond shape or geometric pattern. Chesterfields may also feature a stud trim and castor wheel feet.
Where did the design originate?
The history of the chesterfield dates to many centuries ago. They are thought to have originated in Britain during the mid-1700’s. Lord Philip Stanhope, the fourth Earl of Chesterfield is credited for commissioning the original design. The Chesterfield has since gone on to include many modern improvements, mainly proper springs and comfortable cushioning.
What styles work with Chesterfield lounges?
Chesterfield’s have always been a representation of furniture luxury. Originally, chesterfields were reserved for only the rich and royalty. A leather chesterfield will best suit luxury, whiskey room and classical vintage interiors. However, it is now becoming more common for leather chesterfields to be used as accent pieces in Industrial and country styles. The use of fabrics like linen and velvet have created a whole new world for the chesterfield. Soft fabrics make this lounge more versatile, making it suitable for almost any style; including Mid Century, Farmhouse, Hamptons and Coastal interiors.
What makes a sofa from Dovetailed & Doublestitched different?
We prioritize the use of premium materials like top grain cowhide and hardwood timbers. You will not find any split or corrected grain leathers used in any of our products. We do not use cheap cushion fills. We instead use premium high-density foams and duck feather. Our leather chesterfields are of commercial quality. In fact, you can find our leather sofas in pubs and clubs spanning Australia.
What sort of care is required?
The amount of care required will depend on your choice of material. Leather chesterfields require minimal care. We usually recommend applying a product like beeswax every 6 months to keep the leather from getting dry. For materials like velvet or linen, a simple vacuum will keep them clean. We recommend avoiding harsh chemical cleaners on any of our chesterfield lounges, regardless of the material.
